Tucson Academy of Leadership & Arts Reviews

We switched to this school because of a bully problem at our last school. Our son is doing great and now loves going to school. The school is more organic than traditional schools. If you enjoy heavy structure, a arts-focused school is probably not for you. Also, many problem students have been removed (beginning last year). I have seen a lot of improvement with the new principal Ms. Norris. Now my son has dance and a good arts teacher along with music. No more uniforms, either!!! My son is just thriving.

this school started off as a good begging place for an elementary student, but as the years progress the school suddenly starts to feel as if its lacking more of a dedicated curriculum and there are no extracurricular and during my 8th grade year there were many bullies and there was no adult supervision. basically this is school is key on writing. there is no art element. and this school they tell you that art and the bathroom are privileges and don't take them for granted. in my opinion is pathetic. also this school believes in punishing everyone for one person's mistake. I'm now a junior and i do find myself excelling in almost everything. in earlier times, this school was okay. but i do not recomend it.

In response to the email posted yesterday...I agree that the school could use a little more disicipline...but the kids are doing great...I too have children that go to this school, and my two girls love thier teachers...if Ms. Maurand and Ms. Julie leave...we probably would too....thanks TALA!!!

My kids love to go there Ms. Julie is amazing and Ms. Aurand is as well thtere hve been changes there which are ok I prefer things not to change but my kids are happy so that makes me happy some of the kids there are bad and bother my children that is my only complaint so if your kid is naughty this would not be the school for your kid they hve small classes which i love but it does not matter how I feel it matters how my kids feel about it and they love it

Principal LEON BUTTLER is the only reason my children attend this school. If he ever leaves, we're leaving, too!

This school has the warmest and most caring environment I have ever experienced. Instruction is 'individualized,' expectations are high, and the environment is both parent and student friendly. TALA's staff is incredible and very devoted. I love Tucson Academy of Leadership and Arts because my children want to be here!!

Dedicated principle, some good teachers, but most of the kids had been kicked out of every public school in the district. Lots of bullying and messy curriculum. The fact that there were no real walls probably had something to do with the fact that teacher had no control.

As an educator w/a post-grad in Educ.,I am compelled to speak about our exp.in this school. We were told that the sts. were to learn in an open, dynamic environment w/an emphasis on art. But,the curriculum was(at least) a year behind the grade. Also, the material was presented in a didactic/learn by rote form. The admin.& the teachers did not communicate w/one another. Also, the parents were discouraged to volunteer or visit the classes.Sadly, bullying was rampant. One teacher,(Science), was a mentor, who helped my student & others thru the rest of the year-great teacher! Now my child is at a good, solid school & is eager to go (even early!). She loves the school, the people who attend/work there, which,in turn, facilitates learning.I hope this helps!

I realize this school is aimed at students who struggle in public schools. When I was a freshman in highschool, I attended this school hoping to find classes and extracirrucular activities associated with art. I was disappointed only to find this school was disorganized, and had no structure for it's classes.

This school has access to many things and has very good resorces. They offer alot of things to do and have really good arts programes. Academics wise they do struggle and the programes are not very well planned out. This school is very racial and so students may have diffcult time fiting in.

All teachers certified, dedicated and enthusiastic. Curriculum emphasis on Reading, Writing & Math. Tutoring available every day. Building remodeling includes addition of 4,000 sq. ft. multipurpose room for a gym and extended day clubs. Waiting list for K=6 classes. Web site available soon.

the school does have a larger percentage of 'difficult students'. most of these kids have adhd and cannot learn in a large class. the classes in this school are small(15-20). I am only familiar with 2 of the teachers and they have been very interested in my child. the art program is not much to speak of but i understand will be improving. test scores are understandably low due to the type of student they teach. parents can be very involved if desired

Dedicated principal. Several good teachers. Good relations with parents. Funding issues affect what classes can be offered. A high percentage of students are behavior problems who have been unsuccessful in other public schools. School claims to focus on visual and performing arts, but very few performing arts classes are offered. No playground and not much gym equipment. Some teachers do not have teaching degrees. Building is dreary and noisy.
